Since 1956 when Mrs Fleming opened the doors to The American School in Switzerland, TASIS has been opening young people’s minds to the world through its innovative educational program based on an American college preparatory curriculum supplemented by European travel and an emphasis on languages, arts, and humanities.

Now in the 21st century, TASIS England will help students to open their minds to the world in ways previously unimaginable through its 1:World initiative. Empowering students with today’s digital devices in the classroom will link them to a world of information, connectivity, communication, and limitless learning opportunities.

The School has adopted the most recent technology standards developed by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and over the next year teachers will be rewriting each course’s curriculum to incorporate them. In addition, the School is committed to fostering the skills that will help students develop a passion for lifelong learning. To help achieve these goals, the 1:World initiative includes the following:

Students in grades Early Years – 4 will have access to Apple iPads.
Students in grades 3 – 8 will be issued individual Chromebooks.
Students in grades 9 – 12 will be expected to bring a laptop computer to class every day. We consider a “laptop computer” to be a wireless, Internet-capable, general purpose computing device with a physical keyboard. Computers that use the Macintosh or Windows operating system are recommended but not required.

The 1:World initiative aims to utilise computer technology in developmentally appropriate ways, emphasising the creative multimedia capabilities of the iPad for younger children, the cloud-based, paperless educational potential of Chromebooks for adolescents, and the flexibility of laptops for older teenagers. The 1:World initiative will help TASIS students prepare not only for university but also for life in the modern world.
